Lea Salonga Makes History on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Lea Salonga has officially made history.

The Filipina theater icon has received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first Filipina to be honored with the prestigious recognition.

With a career spanning Broadway, film, television, and music, Salonga has long been one of the Philippines’ most celebrated performers on the global stage. She first rose to international prominence as Kim in Miss Saigon, a role that earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1991 and cemented her place in theater history.

She later became the singing voice of two beloved Disney characters—Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan in Mulan—and was named a Disney Legend in 2011.

Her career has continued to move between international productions and the Philippine theater scene. In 2025, she returned to Manila to play The Witch in the local production of Into the Woods. She also recently appeared on Broadway in Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends.

Now, her name joins Hollywood’s most recognizable stars as the 2,855th star on the Walk of Fame, under the Live Performance category.

But during the ceremony, Salonga made it clear that the moment was about more than her own career.

“When I began my career, I didn't see very many people who looked like me doing the things I dreamed of doing on the world's biggest stages and screens,” she said.

Looking back, she acknowledged the people who opened doors for her and took chances on her when there was no obvious path for someone who looked like her.

“And over the years, I have watched that world begin to change. Not enough. Not completely. But it has changed.”

For Salonga, that change is visible in the growing number of Filipino and Asian artists now working across the world's biggest stages and screens—telling their own stories, taking on roles that once seemed out of reach, and creating opportunities for the generations that come next.

And perhaps her most meaningful hope was for what her star could mean to someone who sees it years from now.

“I hope that someday a young Filipino kid comes to Hollywood, sees my name, and thinks, Oh, maybe I can get here too.”

It’s a fitting legacy for a performer whose career has, in many ways, helped make that possibility feel real.

Now, her name is permanently part of Hollywood Boulevard—and for the next Filipino kid dreaming of making it there, there’s a little more proof that they can.

The ceremony also featured appearances and remarks from Darren Criss, Brandy, and Ming-Na Wen, while H.E.R. was among those in attendance to celebrate Salonga’s milestone.
