Here's Another Reason To Love SpongeBob Squarepants: He Is Gay!

Sunday, June 14, 2020

The Gays Are Winning!

In celebration of Pride month, Nickelodeon has officially shared that Bikini Bottom's most famous resident, SpongeBob SquarePants is a member of the LGBTQ community.

Earlier today, Nickelodeon tweeted this statement in celebration of Pride — which also features pictures of Korra from The Legend of Korra, actor Michael D. Cohen from Henry Danger:

Interestingly enough, SpongeBob's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, had also given his opinion on the issue in 2005, stating that SpongeBob, alongside his best friend Patrick Star, are asexual.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with what we’re trying to do,” Hillenburg told Reuters at the time.

“We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We’re just trying to be funny and this has got nothing to do with the show.”

He added that there are “more important issues to worry about. I really don’t pay much attention to this.”

Nickelodeon’s sent the internet into a frenzy on when it tweeted about LGBTQ pride month, prompting “SPONGEBOB GAY” to trend on Twitter world-wide.

Happy Pride Month Everyone!

This Youtuber Makes Cooking Fun With Hilarious Kitchen Antics

Monday, June 8, 2020

If there’s one thing we all can agree on about being a Filipino, it’s that we are naturally funny with an appetite. We love to eat and laugh. But who would've thought food and humor would mix well? Luis Azcona and Sharlene Gumpal did.

Listening to Luis narrate his fiancΓ©, Sharlene’s cooking videos is undeniably a comical breakthrough. Puns and jokes in the entire videos were hidden in between ingredients presentation, clumsy errors, and the fun process. "Hello sa inyo, mga bata!" impersonations. Vanilla jokes. Strawberries na nakipagsapalaran sa Maynila. Nanay ng almond. These are just a few of "Luis Azcona Videos'' hidden gems.

The 32-year-old music and video producer with a natural sense of humor, paves his way to an original social media content. His videos are very much unique and pure that it makes one unconsciously smile at a cooking tutorial. And he's not even trying too hard.

In an exclusive interview with Metroscene Mag, Luis and Sharlene unveils how they find inspiration and motivation to create this one-of-a-kind content.

Kitchen stories

Just like his real-life heroes, Anthony Bourdain and Elon Musk, Luis is a visionary and prefers to live in the moment. It’s a strategy he calls “just having fun.” According to him, his motivation comes from the fun that goes along with the entire process of filming.

“My motivation is the fun that we experience during production, and interacting with our subscribers," he said.

Creating unique and valuable content is a multifaceted challenge, and for our dear Sharlene, it's a challenge accepted.

“Na-cha-challenge 'yung inner artist ko, how I will execute in a creative way especially the plating. I look up to Joshua Weissman, Adam Liaw and Marion’s Kitchen. Mel Thompson for makeup,” she shared.
.

The imperfect recipe for perfection

One strength of their content is how they do not cut out the mistakes in cooking--in clumsy holding or filling, breaking eggs, or missing out an ingredient. It's an added ingredient to what makes it so natural. A testimony that says: one's flaws does not make one flawed. Otherwise, clean it up then grow from it.

“I think it's the fact that we don't hide the mistakes in the process. We are home cooks that make mistakes all the time and I think our viewers can resonate with that. Plus, I think the rhymes, the puns, the humour in the voice over instructions help too,” Luis answered as to what makes their content unique from others.

Aside from their online cooking shows, Luis first started uploading musical content, travel vlogs, and educational and witty videos like Tagalog-Bisaya Tutorials and Bokabularyo ni Yorme. Now, Sharlene's make-up tutorials made it to the ensemble still alongside Luis' funny remarks.

Dealing with the bad eggs

Although social media really gives everyone a platform to showcase their talents and creativity, it is also filled with bored trolls. Luckily, the couple is blessed with supportive and loving fans.

“Not really. There's maybe 1% of them. We're very lucky to have a nice, supportive community,” they answered when asked about handling online criticism.

A pinch of life lessons and a smidgen of wisdom

Just like in cooking, the couple have had their fair share of trial and error in terms of finding the right content that suits everyone's taste. The couple now has more than half a million followers on Facebook and almost eighty thousand subscribers on Youtube, and counting. The couple has proved that the secret to achieving success in one's life is doing what you love and loving what you do.

“Create what makes sense to you. If you're on a beach and you got a surfboard, make a surfing video. Obsessed with gardening? Gardening channel. And so on. That way, you will never fail, because if no one watches it, at least you had fun. Most of the time, fans can sense if the creator is having fun and that kind of appeal converts to shares and views.”

If you're reading this, know one thing or two: you love food or you just love watching videos in general. If that's the case, Luis and Sharelene's channel might just be the perfect thing for you!

The couple uploads their videos every week on  Facebook and Youtube.

'Gameboys', a much healthier choice than 'Sakristan'

Saturday, May 23, 2020

Gameboys: A much healthier choice than 'Sakristan' - Metroscene Mag

Set in the present day of pandemic, a fresh series that will surely captivate hearts and create buzz comes in a surprise, and it's a much healthier option than 'Sakristan.'

In a quarantine period where Pinoy viewers were hooked and laser-eyed to the popular Boy Love (BL) series from Thailand, '2gether', a Filipino BL series entitled 'Gameboys' will surely make a mark.

Also Read:  The Metro Manila Pride and Festival is going virtual this year

Recently premiered last May 22 in The IdeaFirst Company's Youtube page, the show's first episode 'Pass or Play' opens with the lead actor, Cairo, played by Elijah Canlas, Facebook live-watching his online play with fans.

Next comes Gavreel, starring Kokoy dos Santos, who defeated Cairo in an online match. But what happens when two unexpected friends not just play their consoles, but play in the name of love?

The first time I watched the pilot episode, I was in awe, maybe because I didn't expect this kind of a daring move for a show to be shown in the country. But then I found myself smiling as the episode ran.

Gameboys: A much healthier choice than 'Sakristan' - Metroscene Mag

'Gameboys' is a promising BL series that will create history in the theme of LGBTQ+ in the country. Sure, shows like this is still considered as a taboo but it will effectively create discussions and discourse.

Not to mention that it is the first Filipino BL series, because while there were a lot of gay media produced beforehand, none were really using Thai's BL formula, not like this one.

It's a great start. A fearless dip of toe in the water. With two actors who have been harnessed by numerous indie films, their acting prowess is definitely a no doubt.

Shooting in this quarantine period, the show is oustanding considering the limited production and social distancing each one should observe. The editing and shoot-from-webcam tone is a notable work.

Although cringey at some parts, the actors' exchange and delivery of lines and 'pabebe' acting is great. Also noting Kokoy's charm and Elijah's cuteness are off the charts.

Who said boys can't play games then eventually fall in love? Fingers crossed.

However, the producers of the show are still collecting the audience's reactions and are still deciding on the show's future. Help in making it a regular BL series and show them your love and support!

Who knows the Philippines is ought to have its own version of SarawatTine?

Many of us have internet access, yet few of us choose to troll. Just plain nasty. Imagine how tired we are? These little social media rats will not only tarnish your brand or reputation, but some also harass people in a traumatizing way.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to #StarveTheTrolls.

Troll accounts are more likely new and focuses only on  few threads and post irrelevant content, and  have much lower writing quality than authentic users which isn't much of a surprise.

'The Half of It' is a revolutionary gem that allows us to think and question ourselves

Tuesday, May 12, 2020

'The Half of It' Neflix - Metroscene Mag

"Love is simply the name for the desire and pursuit of the whole."

The film opens with this quote from Plato. Slowly, the dark background is interrupted by moving dashes of gray until a new scene appears: a body with four arms, four legs, and two faces on a single head. We hear the voice of our main character Ellie Chu, softly narrating how we were split into two halves because the gods feared our wholeness. And then we spend our entire lifetimes in search of our other halves.

But this is high school. And Ellie has no time searching for her other half. Instead she uses her time to write essays for her classmates in exchange for money, watch old English shows with her Chinese father to help him speak English, and steal secret glances from the pretty Aster Flores, whom she liked in silence.

'The Half of It' Neflix - Metroscene Mag

Suddenly Paul Munksy, an inarticulate football player, enters the frame. He seeks Ellie’s help to write a love letter, intending to give it to Aster. Ellie was reluctant at first but since she badly needed the money, she accepted. This is where the story develops.

It's easy to find a bit of ourselves in every character: how we easily stutter and find words slipping away at the sight of people we adore, how we cope up with our own struggles, how we fall for the most unexpected people, and how we own the love we're willing to give with pride.

'The Half of It' dives into the deeper meaning of love. Now we can love ourselves and others through acceptance, and how it is a blessing rather than a product of sin.

The film does not only revolve about teenage romance but tackles greater struggles such as misconceptions on religion, homosexuality, communication, and friendship.

Also Read:  The Metro Manila Pride and Festival is going virtual this year

Here we see how difficult it can be to verbalize and communicate our feelings. In one scene, Ellie's father falters in an attempt to speak English, while Paul struggles to sew his words together. A brief moment of silence was how they spoke the loudest.

All in all, 'The Half of It' is a revolutionary gem that allowed us to think and question ourselves. It's a film of half-worn jackets slumped lazily on one shoulder, and brutal honesties often half meant. Despite the subtle nods to the lack of wholeness in many scenes, it is a fulfilling experience that would leave you feeling whole.

Calling Anime Fans! A New Inuyasha Sequel Is Currently In The Works

Sunday, May 10, 2020

Calling Anime Fans! A New Inuyasha Sequel Is Currently In The Works - Metroscene Mag

As known by fans, Inuyasha has already ended with Inuyasha: The Final Act. However, it looks like creator Rumiko Takahashi isn’t quite done with the half demon and the supernatural world yet.

The Inuyasha series is already confirmed to have a comeback with a new project that will introduce us to Inuyasha and Sesshomaru’s daughters! Yes. you read that right!

The sequel is reported to be called “Hanyou no Yashahime: Sengoku Otogi Soushi” or “Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon”. A full visual has also been released together with some character designs. The character designs, as seen, reveal resemblances to the characters of Inuyasha: Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, and Sango.

Here’s the description of the plot from the announcement:

“In Feudal Japan, Half-Demon twins Towa and Setsuna are separated from each other during a forest fire. While desperately searching for her younger sister, Towa wanders into a mysterious tunnel that sends her into present-day Japan, where she is found and raised by Kagome Higurashi’s brother, Sota, and his family.

Ten years later, the tunnel that connects the two eras has reopened, allowing Towa to be reunited with Setsuna, who is now a Demon Slayer working for Kohaku. But to Towa’s shock, Setsuna appears to have lost all memories of her older sister.

Joined by Moroha, the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome, the three young women travel between the two eras on an adventure to regain their missing past.”

The anime’s official website is now also open. Hopefully the new sequel will include fan favourite characters like Kagome, Miroku, and Sango as well.
