Getting in the Scene with Banana Queen, Joyce Glorioso

Saturday, October 3, 2020

Within 27 years, Joyce Glorioso has already changed two worlds. First, the quiet blue of the Pagbilao sky that erupted in bliss on the day of her birth. Second, the stirring silence of West Virginia, USA, where two years ago, had been home to her laughter and dreams when she spent months of her BS HRM traineeship.

These worlds were her own, and they’re stories we would never hear unless we meet Joyce. In an interview with Metroscene Mag, Joyce Glorioso, or more popularly known in social media as “Joyang”, shared stories of her life, and her thoughts on how her simple yet fun world, was slowly beginning to be a part of ours.

Banana Queen

With over 420,000 followers, and 6.6 Million likes on TIkTok, Joyang gained social media fame when she started creating and uploading short comedic skits, and her version of viral dance challenges on the app. She gained attention first on TikTok, then on other social media sites like Twitter, where she uploads her videos that get thousands of likes and retweets.

Perhaps her most remarkable contents were the videos in which a bunch of bananas can be seen hanging like a ‘chandelier’ in plain view. But Joyang didn’t earn the title of “Banana Queen” just because she uses bananas in her videos as props. She earned this title because, as the famous line goes - “Maghanap ka ng puno sa Pilipinas, saging lang ang may puso!” - and indeed, there are many content creators in the country today, but what can easily set Joyang apart from them all, is her heart.

Having been raised in a small and simple family in Pagbilao, Quezon, with a humble sari-sari store as a source of income, Joyang was aware of how the pandemic turned lives upside down, and wanted to give people something that would at least, make them smile.

“I want to help people who are suffering today to reduce their stress by creating funny contents to make them happy”, Joyang stated, emphasizing that most of her content were inspired by the eagerness to bring joy during these trying times.

Social Media Star

Joyang never planned to become a content creator, nor become viral in different social media sites. As a graduate of Hotel Restaurant Management, her dream was to score a job abroad, and eventually earn enough money to build her parents’ dream house.

Just like most of us, Joyang began using social media sites as an outlet, and as an escape from boredom. But being the naturally funny, good-spirited person that she is, the videos that she posted caught the attention of netizens with its right level of relatability, and humor that many people found extremely entertaining to watch. Soon, the number of her followers and views grew, and now she’s currently working on her YouTube channel, Joyang TV, where she uploads life vlogs mixed with jolly and quick-witted jokes.

In pursuing the kind of content she makes in her social media accounts, Joyang shared that she has “Five Fs” as her sources of motivation - Family, Friends, Followers, Filipinos and Father Above. Her list of motivations also includes Filipino comedians that she looks up to, and many of her idols who inspire her to make content that turns ordinary things in life as sources of a good laugh.

Despite the positivity and light-heartedness of her videos, some people still find a reason to hate on her and her works. “I just ignore it”, she said, and explained that she just tries to be patient with them, and be more understanding of their opinions.

The Joy in Joyang

It’s easy to discredit content creators due to the notoriety attached to social media fame, and with many creators becoming more arrogant as they become more popular. Joyang on one hand, despite having thousands of fans, does not think the same way. “I really don't see myself as an influencer, I just see myself as an individual who's spreading good vibes through social media”.

Behind the fun and famous personality we see on our screens, is a person of great humility. In real life, the 27-year-old Banana Queen is just a daughter who helps in running their family business; the social media star is just an ordinary girl with an extraordinary creativity that shines through; and JoyangTv is just the young and witty Joyce Glorioso who continues to dream big while making sure we watch her videos with a smile on our faces.

Joyang ended the interview with this message for young aspiring content creators: “Focus on what they are doing, remind themselves to always be thankful to God for all the blessings, small or big. Follow their dreams and never give up. And lastly to be kind - the most essential thing in these trying times. For me even if you're not an educated person, if you have a kind heart and a pure soul, you can inspire every single person around you”.

Lockdown Guide: How to Manage Anxiety and Isolation During Quarantine

Lockdown Guide: How to Manage Anxiety and Isolation During Quarantine - Metroscene Mag

The fears that surround the COVID-19 pandemic can take an emotional toll, especially if you're already living with an anxiety disorder. For many people, the uncertainty surrounding coronavirus is the hardest thing to handle, causing panic that leads to breathing difficulties.

In a clinical setting, psychologists use exercise, medicine, and different kinds of therapy to treat anxiety. But if you do not have the means to connect with your (or have one in the first place) psychologist, it’s okay. There are still a lot of things you can do to ease your anxiety through this trying times.

Indulge yourself in reading

Lockdown Guide: How to Manage Anxiety and Isolation During Quarantine - Metroscene Mag

You may say, I know that already or I have done that already, and it doesn't help. Reading books should be enjoyed in a quite well-ventilated area in your house. Immersing yourself in the story helps you to relax and have an engaging experience with the story. Pick a book that is interesting to you, read something happy, or sparks joy in you.

Unleash the artist in you

Lockdown Guide: How to Manage Anxiety and Isolation During Quarantine - Metroscene Mag

Create 'do it yourself' projects; some people enjoy it; they find it entertaining and relaxing. The feeling of satisfaction when you finished the project, it gives you joy. While doing the project, your mind will be directed away from those thoughts that worry you and will be now focused on the thing you are doing. You can start small, like DIY bracelets, or make teddy bears from old socks and clothes. It's up to you!

Find time to meditate

You may hate exercises and moving a lot, but yoga is proven to not only strengthen your bones, but it also helps the mind and body to relax. When doing yoga, find a quiet place in your house, or if you like, you can play soothing music. Then don't forget to breathe in and breathe out. This will calm your nerves.

Tell your stories

Lockdown Guide: How to Manage Anxiety and Isolation During Quarantine - Metroscene Mag

Letting it out is better than keeping it in. Talk to your friends on the phone; you can video call or message them as well. Talking about things that make you feel anxious can help ease your troubles. Just pick a friend that you can trust and not a negative person. She/He can console you and listen to everything that you have to say. But it's better if you have your therapist's phone number that you can call, if not settle with friends.

Play with your pets

Lockdown Guide: How to Manage Anxiety and Isolation During Quarantine - Metroscene Mag

If you have a dog, cat, fish, or bird. Whatever you have at home that you call a pet, you should play with them, spend some time grooming them. It will take your mind off the situation.

Be one with nature

Lockdown Guide: How to Manage Anxiety and Isolation During Quarantine - Metroscene Mag

If you don't have plants, try planting some, it will take a while for it to grow, but you are in quarantine, so you'll have a daily task to water and tend to your garden. If you already have plants, try watering them and remove their dried leaves. Admire their beauty, admire their flowers and leaves.

Remember, while doing these things, breathe in and breathe out. Relax, ease your mind, don't think about it. Take your time to calm down. Laugh, cry, and it's okay. Just remember that there are therapists online that you can contact if you can't handle it anymore. Reach out, and it's better than to keep it all to yourself.

Some of these tips may not be helpful to those who are experiencing full-blown anxiety attacks, but you can prevent them from happening by breathing exercises and soothing the person.

LGBTQ+ lost a safe place as Today x Future announces closure - metroscene mag

It’s a sad day for the LGBTQ+ community as Cubao’s famous bar, Today x Future announced its closure.

For almost 12 years, the bar has become safe place very dear to every people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other sexual orientations and gender identities.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, the bar shared their gratitude for the community, “Thank you to all our promoters, our performers, our tireless staff and all our regulars, old and new. You have made our tiny abode the warmest, most nurturing nursery it can be.”

Read Today x Future’s full statement below:

Today x Future is closing.
After long days and nights of deliberation, wrestling options and way too much alcohol to cushion the emotion, we are left with the decision to say farewell.
We would have turned 12 years old but alas, the uncertainty has made it incredibly difficult. However, this isn’t a statement about sorrow and regrets and wishing things would have been different. This is a love letter—a love letter to all of you who have kept our Future shining bright for over a decade.
We don’t know what the future holds but we hold on to all the unforgettable memories. We’ll always remember them fondly, from the loud, endless singalongs and sardinas sayawan to the quiet moments when we realise how much we all mean to each other.
Thank you to all our promoters, our performers, our tireless staff and all our regulars, old and new. You have made our tiny abode the warmest, most nurturing nursery it can be.
As we close another chapter, we keep one open. Futur:st, our baby sibling in Poblacion will remain open as long as we can keep it that way. In the coming weeks, we will be announcing plans to welcome you back there in another shape and form, and we hope you can continue to support us and make it your second home.
We may not be able to throw Today x Future the closing party it truly deserved but we are throwing one last hurrah on June 27, with our online Pride celebration. More details to be announced in the coming days!
What is coming is better than what is gone? Who knows? Perhaps we’ll see you again in the near future ❤
We love you. We thank you. We will miss you.

As the nightclub closed its curtains, avid goers took to social media to share how Today x Future has become part of their lives.

This Youtuber Makes Cooking Fun With Hilarious Kitchen Antics

Monday, June 8, 2020

If there’s one thing we all can agree on about being a Filipino, it’s that we are naturally funny with an appetite. We love to eat and laugh. But who would've thought food and humor would mix well? Luis Azcona and Sharlene Gumpal did.

Listening to Luis narrate his fiancΓ©, Sharlene’s cooking videos is undeniably a comical breakthrough. Puns and jokes in the entire videos were hidden in between ingredients presentation, clumsy errors, and the fun process. "Hello sa inyo, mga bata!" impersonations. Vanilla jokes. Strawberries na nakipagsapalaran sa Maynila. Nanay ng almond. These are just a few of "Luis Azcona Videos'' hidden gems.

The 32-year-old music and video producer with a natural sense of humor, paves his way to an original social media content. His videos are very much unique and pure that it makes one unconsciously smile at a cooking tutorial. And he's not even trying too hard.

In an exclusive interview with Metroscene Mag, Luis and Sharlene unveils how they find inspiration and motivation to create this one-of-a-kind content.

Kitchen stories

Just like his real-life heroes, Anthony Bourdain and Elon Musk, Luis is a visionary and prefers to live in the moment. It’s a strategy he calls “just having fun.” According to him, his motivation comes from the fun that goes along with the entire process of filming.

“My motivation is the fun that we experience during production, and interacting with our subscribers," he said.

Creating unique and valuable content is a multifaceted challenge, and for our dear Sharlene, it's a challenge accepted.

“Na-cha-challenge 'yung inner artist ko, how I will execute in a creative way especially the plating. I look up to Joshua Weissman, Adam Liaw and Marion’s Kitchen. Mel Thompson for makeup,” she shared.
.

The imperfect recipe for perfection

One strength of their content is how they do not cut out the mistakes in cooking--in clumsy holding or filling, breaking eggs, or missing out an ingredient. It's an added ingredient to what makes it so natural. A testimony that says: one's flaws does not make one flawed. Otherwise, clean it up then grow from it.

“I think it's the fact that we don't hide the mistakes in the process. We are home cooks that make mistakes all the time and I think our viewers can resonate with that. Plus, I think the rhymes, the puns, the humour in the voice over instructions help too,” Luis answered as to what makes their content unique from others.

Aside from their online cooking shows, Luis first started uploading musical content, travel vlogs, and educational and witty videos like Tagalog-Bisaya Tutorials and Bokabularyo ni Yorme. Now, Sharlene's make-up tutorials made it to the ensemble still alongside Luis' funny remarks.

Dealing with the bad eggs

Although social media really gives everyone a platform to showcase their talents and creativity, it is also filled with bored trolls. Luckily, the couple is blessed with supportive and loving fans.

“Not really. There's maybe 1% of them. We're very lucky to have a nice, supportive community,” they answered when asked about handling online criticism.

A pinch of life lessons and a smidgen of wisdom

Just like in cooking, the couple have had their fair share of trial and error in terms of finding the right content that suits everyone's taste. The couple now has more than half a million followers on Facebook and almost eighty thousand subscribers on Youtube, and counting. The couple has proved that the secret to achieving success in one's life is doing what you love and loving what you do.

“Create what makes sense to you. If you're on a beach and you got a surfboard, make a surfing video. Obsessed with gardening? Gardening channel. And so on. That way, you will never fail, because if no one watches it, at least you had fun. Most of the time, fans can sense if the creator is having fun and that kind of appeal converts to shares and views.”

If you're reading this, know one thing or two: you love food or you just love watching videos in general. If that's the case, Luis and Sharelene's channel might just be the perfect thing for you!

The couple uploads their videos every week on  Facebook and Youtube.
