As early as the turn of the 19th century, Filipino-made komiks have already taken part in Philippine pop-culture. From being an effective outlet of political expression to a simple source of entertainment, komiks have gone through a number of phases. The industry of local komiks in the country has had its ups and downs over the years, and this time, indie komiks seem to be having a resurgence.

Through the efforts of dedicated creators of Kalabaw Kolektib, Filipino-made komiks have found a new life in the digital age. Last September 5, the creative group launched Penlab. ink, a website wherein Filipino creators, writers, and komik junkies can share their love for komiks.

“We collaborated with other creators who wanted to share their comics with more people. We wanted to create a digital space for our shared love for Pinoy komiks, in the same way, that cons let you find your favorites and discover new gems,” the creators said.

Penlab.ink is finally up. Read now at: https://penlab.ink/ A website was always in our plans, but with all the work and effort to create just another website for a limited resource of comics, it felt like it wasn't enough. So, the idea grew into something bigger than us. We collaborated with other creators who wanted to share their comics to more people. We wanted to create a digital space for our shared love for Pinoy komiks, in the same way that cons let you find your favorites and discover new gems. Penlab.ink is a place where you can read and share all styles of Pinoy komiks. We're putting it up for free, but there are bigger plans in development to help open options for readers to further support their favorite creators. Okay, tama na drama. TL;DR: Support our community that believes in sharing our own stories. Read on Penlab, tell your friends, and share to the whole world our homegrown Pinoy komiks! #pinoykomiks #komiks #artph #comics #webtoon

According to Kalabaw Kolektib, the initiative aims to provide an avenue for both creators and readers of komiks through Penlab. ink. Interested Filipino-Komik creators can submit their finished works on the Penlab website to give their stories and creations a digital home.

Penlab.ink features a wide collection of Filipino komiks with different styles and stories—for free!
Among the top picks on the website are Katipunera Warrior, set in the Philippines during the colonial era, Nagmamahal, Maria Clara, which follows Maria Clara in modern-day Manila, and Super Proxies with a superhero-esque storyline. Check out Penlab here and support local artists! For more information, you can check their Facebook and Instagram.
