How Kerwin King redefines what it means to be an influencer

Jan 16, 2022 0 comments

Minimalist but full of thought and impact. This is how content creator Kerwin King described his current image in the online world. For the 26-year old lifestyle enthusiast, the core of his brand is leaving a lasting impression to his audience through sharing his skills and knowledge.

Recognized for his well-curated contents varying from art, music, photography and travels, it is safe to say that Kerwin is indeed a jack of all trades. With over 300,000 followers across his social media platforms, he continues to explore his own capabilities on various fields while staying true to his own style. Just recently, he was launched as one of the “players” of Rise iHub, the newest playground for online content creators of ABS-CBN Films' talent management arm Rise Artists Studio. We caught up with him in an interview to get to know more about content creation and his plans for the future.

On being a content creator

Many aren’t aware of the fact that prior to being an internet personality, Kerwin is a Medical Technologist. When asked about how his online career took off, he mentioned that it all started just by accident when people began noticing the potential of the things he does online.

“Yung mga ginagawa [kong content] kasi ineenjoy ko. Kumbaga, accident yung pagiging content creator pero gusto ko talaga siyang gawin for myself, pero since marami akong nakikitang naiinspire at natutuwa, mas nakakapagbigay ng good feeling sa akin, mas ginaganahan akong gumawa pa ng content,” he said.

If you had been following Kerwin for quite some time now, you'd probably have seen his fashion blogs, travel photography, and art sketches on his social media accounts. He also had ventured in the field of acting and recently we have seen him flex his musical skills through his song covers. His content varies depending on the platform that he uses: lifestyle snippets on tiktok, art and fashion on instagram, and his day-to-day thoughts on twitter. But what’s important for him no matter what platform it might be, is that he enjoys what he does and this enjoyment translates to his audience’s screens.

Staying connected during the pandemic

The pandemic might have compelled us to keep a safe distance away from each other but Kerwin makes sure to stay connected with others. Aside from staying active online, collecting vinyls and keeping a healthy mind and body, what kept him busy the most during the quarantine is staying connected with all the special people around him: his family, his friends and his followers. “It’s important to have your social circle that helps you maintain your sanity,” he said.

When it comes to his work as a content creator, he shared that the pandemic has greatly affected the type of content he produces. During the pre-pandemic days his content mostly revolved around traveling and attending events, but with the restrictions brought by the pandemic, these things became impossible to accomplish. With these major changes, he shifted to creating more art and relatable content.

For him, using your creativity and resourcefulness really helps in content creation during these times. He said, “Mas na understand ko yung importance ng pagiging creative na kailangan mong gumawa ng iba’t ibang bagay na nasa paligid mo lang to create content na hindi mo kailangang lumabas.”

With great following, comes great responsibility

“Before anything else, we are Filipinos first,” he said when asked on the importance of using his platform in amplifying calls of various sectors and inspiring others to create their own informed opinions.

“Everything happening around us will always have an effect [on us] whether it is positive or negative, big or small, direct or indirect. There’s no time for me to become neutral about the things that are happening around us. Kumbaga, kung nakikita mo na yung injustices in front of you, there is no time to be neutral anymore,” he added.

Having a huge following bears the possibility of influencing the views of those you can reach. That is why he makes it a point to always share his thoughts online and offline, and have a stand on relevant socio-political issues. He encourages his followers to also do the same. Kerwin said, “More than being an obligation, it is our sense of purpose to put meaning to the tag influencer”.

His message to the youth and future content creators

Staying authentic for him is the best advice he could give to those young creatives who want to venture to the path of content creation. He advised, “show who you really are and everything else will follow. People will love you because of your authenticity”.

He also encourages the youth to always be critical, to engage in important discussions and to register for the upcoming 2022 elections. For all the young people, especially the first time voters, he shared these words: “Remember that your vote counts, it’s valid and it matters. Your vote is your voice and your voice is your power”.

What’s next for Kerwin King?

With all the great things Kerwin is doing right now, he still looks forward to the things he could possibly do in the future, and he is more than willing to grow more. When given the opportunity, he said he really wants to venture into the music scene. He reasons that through music he hopes he can also tell stories, share feelings, and inspire others as well. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for Kerwin and we wish him success in his future endeavors.
