I am Julius Deterala, a student and contemporary pop surrealist in Bulan, Sorsogon. My artworks usually have a yellow smiley face in a person’s head, I use that symbolism because I can easily express emotions and convey my inner thoughts, also I want my viewers to focus more on the message and emotions that my subjects show. My works are pertinent to social issues, and personal experiences.

As I’ve said most of my works are based on my thoughts and observations. My creative process usually starts from a thought that randomly goes into my mind and then I transfer it immediately to a blank piece of paper and then compose a piece, and I paint it.

Finding my art style has been a very long and frustrating journey. Back then I used to do realism and honestly based on my experience I think it prevented me from growing as the artist that I wanted to become, because I just copy from references, though it helped me improve my skills. I want my art to be original and at the same time I can express myself more freely, so now I focus on pop surrealism.

Yes, my mom told me that when I was a child, I used to draw over our walls with a pencil or a crayon. And when I reached grade school, I always join art competitions where I am always chosen to represent our school. In 2015, I took art seriously, I joined art groups and workshops, and that was the time when my urge to be an artist started.
