LOOK: Pia Wurtzbach pays tribute to Pinay Miss Universe queens

May 2, 2022 0 comments

Other than the candidates during the recently concluded Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Pageant, one of the night's highlights was Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach's not just one but four show-stopping gowns. As we all know, Pia can do no wrong when serving looks and face for the Gods, but our homegirl served us body, face, and talent, and we ate it all up!

Well, suppose you're still hung up on her looks during the coronation night. In that case, it's your lucky day because she posted a 17-minute vlog on her YouTube channel that she described as a "paandar" shoot, paying homage to the Philippines' past Miss Universe titleholders – Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Catriona Gray, and Pia herself.

Manila Girl on the Moon

The first gown, dubbed "Manila Girl on the Moon," is a white beaded modern Filipiniana with ostrich feathers designed by Mark Bumgarner. According to Pia, they drew inspiration from the Philippines' Gloria Diaz's Miss Universe 1969 gown. Her stylist, Adrianne Concepcion, initially conceptualized the look as a take on the "Manila Girl" and Gloria Diaz's Miss Universe question: "In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon if a man from the moon landed in your hometown. What would you do to entertain him?"

In Full Bloom

Say hello to yellow! According to Pia, this is her modern take on the swimsuit round. Perry Tabora wanted to go for a very sporty feel but still a very glam style with this one. Jaggy Glarino designed the solid yellow gown, it was not the typical pageant gown with sparkles and a tight fit but served A LOT of attitude, which Pia lived for. They incorporated Miss Universe 1973 Margie Moran's gown with the set itself displaying a different array of flowers since her gown had a flower ensemble on her left shoulder.

My Crowning Glory

A queen understands her true essence, and with that, Pia also referenced her win during that night. But you are wrong if you think that the blue Albert Andrada gown she wore in the 64th edition of Miss Universe inspired her third gown designed by Louis Pangilinan! According to Pia, her lead stylists, Rain Dagala and Em Milan, were inspired by the Miss Universe 2015's DIC crown. "We're taking wearing the crown to the next level – not just on top of our heads, but as an embodiment of how every woman should be celebrated whatever size, shape, or age she is," she said

Girl on Fire

By the end of the night, Pia burned the set with her final look inspired by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray's iconic Mak Tumang lava gown. She wore a red sequin dress dubbed as "Girl on Fire," designed by Glademir Echavarre. With Qurator Studios and Pam Quinones working together on the styling, they wanted it to feel very liquid, sleek, and slinky and further reinforced it with a pair of red latex gloves. Pia said that the message she wants to deliver with this dress is that, "We want every woman to feel like she is a phoenix rising who is fierce, feminine, and fabulous in everything that she does."
