Peppa Pig openly welcomes first same-sex couple into the series

Although the show is primarily aimed at toddlers and young kids, admit it or not but Peppa, together with her little brother George, Mummy Pig, and Daddy Pig, family is a squealing good time for little ones and even adults too! But aside from the quirky antics and nursery rhymes, the show is also progressive and inculcates lessons for the kids and parents.

The show is now in its 18-year running period and it's better than ever. Why you might ask? Recently, the well-loved cartoon characters globally are introducing a same-sex couple into its programming!

In the episode entitled Families, Penny the polar bear shows Peppa an illustration of her family. Her mother is a doctor, and her other mother likes to cook spaghetti. The episode aired two years after posting a petition to feature LGBTQIA+ characters in the popular cartoon show and garnered 24,000 signatures.

Despite the considerable demand for this type of episode, mixed reviews about the episode have emerged on social media. Some applauded the show's creators for utilizing the show’s popularity by showing them that other types of families exist apart from the ones they have. At the same time, children who belong in these families are being represented.

While there are reviews praising the animated show, there were some criticisms on the other hand. Some comments on the internet did not completely agree with what the show has done.

Peppa Pig isn’t the first animated show that features a same-sex character. We have Korra and Asami from The Legend of Korra, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire from Adventure Time and Ruby and Sapphire from Steven Universe.
