Hold onto your lucky charms because the popular romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" is getting the Broadway treatment!
The production is still in its early days, but Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures is teaming up with author Kevin Kwan to bring his bestselling novel to the stage as a musical.
The blockbuster success of the 2018 film propelled director Jon M. Chu to A-list status, leading him to direct the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's "In the Heights." And now, fresh off directing the highly anticipated "Wicked" movie, this will be Chu's debut in the Broadway scene directing this musical.
The creative team behind the musical is quite impressive. Leah Nanako Winkler ("God Said This") will write the book, while Helen Park will compose the music ("KPOP: The Musical"). Tony-nominated lyricist Amanda Green ("Bring It On") also joins forces with Singaporean music producer Tat Tong to bring the story to life through song.
Crazy Rich Asians follows the story of Rachel Chu when she accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young, to his Singaporean home for a friend's wedding. But what starts as a romantic getaway takes a shocking turn when Rachel discovers Nick's true background: heir to an obscenely wealthy family. As cultures clash and disapproval simmers from Nick's formidable mother, Eleanor, their newfound love faces a formidable test.
The critically acclaimed 2018 film, starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, and Awkwafina, became a cultural phenomenon. The success of "Crazy Rich Asians" propelled all five actors to new heights in their careers. Wu, who had previously gained recognition for her comedic roles on television, landed leading parts in major studio films. Golding, a relative newcomer, became a sought-after leading man. Action movie veteran Yeoh saw a resurgence in interest in her work, while Chan and Awkwafina gained even wider recognition for their comedic and dramatic talents.
