A second season of the live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender was already exciting enough — but Netflix decided to raise the bar even higher by casting two acclaimed Filipino actors!
Oscar-nominated actress Dolly De Leon is set to play Lo and Li, the mysterious and eerily synchronized advisers of Princess Azula. Joining her is theater and television veteran Jon Jon Briones, who takes on the role of Master Piandao, the swordmaster who trained Sokka.
The casting announcement was made through the official Avatar: The Last Airbender Facebook page, and fans are thrilled. Both actors are taking on iconic characters, signaling not just a promising season but a continued commitment to diverse and inclusive casting.
With talent like Dolly and Jon Jon in the mix, it’s safe to say Season 2 just became a must-watch — not just for fans of the franchise, but for anyone who wants to see Filipino excellence on the global stage
Dolly De Leon as Lo and Li
We’re all very much aware of Dolly’s capabilities so it’s no doubt she’ll bring her roles to life. She’s captured the hearts of thousands with her roles in Triangle of Sadness, Nine Perfect Strangers, and Expats, garnering multiple awards and nominations.
The fun part about this series though is that Dolly isn’t just cast for one role, she’s cast for two! Lo and Li are twin elderly advisers for Princess Azula of the fire nation. They’ve appeared in a number of episodes in the original series so we’re set to enjoy Dolly on our screens for a good long while. And what’s more fun is she’s getting double the screen time! We can’t wait to see how the series pulls it off.
Jon Jon Briones as Master Piandao
Jon Jon Briones also brings decades of experience to the table. He’s famous for his work in musicals like the west end revival of Miss Saigon. But not only that, he also starred in shows like Ratched, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, American Horror Story: Apocalypse, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Designated Survivor, and many more.
He’s set to play Master Piandao, which is a swordmaster that the young heroes meet in the Fire Nation. Being avid supporters of the show ourselves, we’re really excited to see Jon Jon for this role because we know he’s about to bring the knowledge and finesse that the role needs.
Following its successful first season, Avatar: The Last Airbender has been renewed for two more seasons, with Season 2 currently in production with our star-studded cast. While an official release date is yet to be announced by Netflix, Season 2 is anticipated to premiere in late 2025 or early 2026, so we can expect to see our talented actors by then. With an all-star cast, skilled production team, and a commitment to diversity, this upcoming season promises to be one worth waiting for.
