The "History, Huh?" era is officially entering its next chapter. Production has formally kicked off for the highly anticipated sequel to the 2023 global rom-com hit, Red, White & Royal Blue. Titled Red, White & Royal Wedding, the sequel is already sent the internet into a frenzy after a behind-the-scenes teaser dropped on Monday, Jan. 19. Shared via Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, the clip features the internet’s favorite leading men, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, back on set with a cheeky caption: “We’re SO beyond back.”
Whose Wedding Is It, Anyway?
While the title might have fans dreaming of Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry walking down the aisle, the stars were quick to set the record straight—for now.In the teaser video, Galitzine (31), returning as England’s Prince Henry, and Perez (34), reprising his role as First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz, clarified the "Royal Wedding" in question. “Oh, I did want to say that we are here for Bea’s wedding,” Perez explained.
Bea, played by Ellie Bamber, is Prince Henry’s younger sister. While the sequel centers on her nuptials, Galitzine playfully teased that an "Alex and Henry" wedding is still “a long ways off at this point.”
A New Vision for the Sequel
While specific plot details are being kept under tight lock and key by Amazon, the creative team behind the sequel promises plenty of the optimism and "gay joy" that made the first film a breakout success. The script is a collaborative effort co-written by original author Casey McQuiston, alongside Gemma Burgess and the first film’s director, Matthew López. In an exciting shift for the franchise, López has passed the directing baton to Jamie Babbit, though he remains heavily involved as a producer and writer. Babbit is a legendary figure in queer cinema, best known for helming the 1999 cult classic But I’m a Cheerleader. In an official statement, Babbit expressed her thrill to be joining this specific cinematic universe, noting that audiences today truly crave the kind of fantasy and romance that these characters provide.
As production continues in London, fans can expect more updates on returning cast members like Uma Thurman and Clifton Collins Jr., as well as potential new faces entering the royal circle.
