Apr 27, 2023 0 comments

Throughout our history, theater has been a mirror that’s been reflecting our society. Its stories that tackle the personal to the socio-political have helped us better understand and scrutinize the status quo and our place in it.

Since its inception last 2019, Pista nin Teatrong Bikolnon has always served this very purpose. This annual event is and has been a celebration of the colorful communities and stories within the Bicol region, its extremely talented local artists, and the rich and immersive culture of its local theater scene.

With the theme DÁNAY/Creating Visions of Freedom, it is back on stage with more stories that explore the different aspects of liberty. Organized by Taragbo Bikol Regional Theater Network, the different events and activities in this celebration will take place in various places in Legazpi City, Albay, from April 26 to April 29.

During its press conference held at the Pasakalye Black Box Art Studio, Julie DM Vega, head of the Pista secretariat, shared that theater in the region is alive more than ever because of the continuous love and support of its local artists. According to her, "Ang theater pinapakita ang reyalidad mula sa iba't ibang sector, komunidad at sa tingin ko, nagpapatuloy silang lumikha ng kwento ng iba't iba miyembro ng bawat community.”

Aside from the 6 sets of theater performances, the four-day event will also offer various activities for participants to enjoy. On April 26-27, there will be a solidarity camp where artists and delegates may come together to strengthen relations and foster camaraderie with other participants. Afterwards, there will be an opening program and parade on April 27 that will start at Bicol University to Peñaranda Park.

On April 28, there will be Directors at Work, which will feature directors from various theater companies. This is an opportunity to listen to their expertise and their creative process. On the same day, a community show called Pista sa Baryo will be held at Brgy Anislag, Daraga, Albay.

The different theater performances will be held at Cinema 4, Ayala Malls, Legazpi, from April 28-29, featuring 6 sets of performances from 14 theater companies all over the Bicol region. Admission Tickets are PHP 100 per set for students, PHP 150 for regulars with free popcorn, and PHP 600 for all access.
